Granite
This heat-proof surface allows you to transfer hot pans directly from oven to countertop. Its utility and aesthetic appeal make it perfect for kitchens that also double as entertaining spaces. One downside is the porosity of the material. Granite can retain moisture and odour, requiring quick cleanup to prevent spilled spaghetti from lingering.
Marble
A beautiful stoneware option, marble is less heat-resistant than granite, but can still stand up to the occasional hot pan. It’s softer and more porous than almost any other countertop option, but the increased care a marble counter requires is often outweighed by its aesthetic appeal.
Laminate
Also known as Formica, this is the least expensive countertop option. Laminate can be applied as an overlay to an existing countertop if you’d like to change the look of your kitchen without using power tools to cut a slab of solid surface or quartz to size.
Solid surface
More easily cut to size than stoneware or quartz, this budget countertop option is favoured for its low porosity and diversity of colours and styles. Solid surface countertops are not heat-resistant and will scorch on contact with hot pots and pans. However, the low cost and lack of odour and moisture retention make it a popular choice for kitchens that feed busy families.
Quartz
A quartz countertop is usually pricier than a solid surface countertop, but costs less than a marble or granite countertop while giving your kitchen a similar finished look. It’s also more heat-resistant than a solid surface or laminate countertop, although it’s not recommended to transfer hot pans directly to a quartz countertop from the stove or oven.
